About
MapAnimate, at a glance
MapAnimate exists so anyone can show where they've been with a beautiful moving map, without paying for software, making an account or handing over their location history.
- What it is
- A free web app that turns trips into animated map videos (MP4, transparent WebM or GIF).
- Who it is for
- Travellers, travel vloggers and YouTubers, Instagram, TikTok and Shorts creators, bloggers, hikers, cyclists, sailors and pilots.
- Price
- Free. No account, no watermark, no export limits, no paid tier.
- How it is funded
- Donations, and in future clearly labelled sponsors on the website. Never ads inside the editor or your videos.
- Input
- Click points on the map (optionally snapped to roads, cycle routes or footpaths), or import GPX, KML, KMZ or IGC files.
- Scenes
- Up to 20 scenes per video, each with its own route, camera and title, joined by camera flights or fades, with an optional zoom-out over the whole trip at the end.
- Sound
- Your own music track (MP3, M4A, WAV or OGG) with fades and looping; a voice-over per scene, recorded in the editor or added as a file, with the music dipping under it; and built-in sound effects for each transport, scene transitions and arrivals. Everything is mixed into the MP4 in your browser.
- Transports
- 26: Walking, Hiking, Running, Cycling, Motorbike, Scooter, Tuk-tuk, Car, 4x4, Campervan, Bus, Overland truck, Train, Tram, Ferry, Sailboat, Speedboat, Kayak, Swimming, Plane, Helicopter, Hot-air balloon, Cable car, Paraglider, Horse, Skiing.
- Map styles
- 16: Field Notes, Old Atlas, Midnight, Topographic, Satellite, Blueprint, Neon Night, Golden Hour, Monochrome, Desert Road, Nordic Frost, Chalkboard, Watercolour, Pastel, Mediterranean, Dusk.
- Output
- MP4 (H.264 with an AAC soundtrack), 1080p / 1440p / 4K, 24 / 30 / 60 fps, 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:5. Also transparent WebM (VP9 with alpha) and GIF.
- Where it runs
- In your browser. Chrome and Edge on a computer work best; phones and tablets can edit and export too, more slowly. Rendering carries on in a background tab.
- Privacy
- No accounts, no upload. Projects, photos and videos stay in your browser only.
- Map data
- OpenStreetMap contributors via OpenMapTiles and OpenFreeMap; Sentinel-2 cloudless imagery by EOX; elevation from AWS Terrain Tiles.
- Commercial use
- Allowed. Keep the small map data credit that is drawn on every video.
- Not included (yet)
- Team sharing and editing one project together.
